The Significance of Vocational Skills

It is not possible for every one to end with higher education and white-collar jobs. This is why a child that is growing up into manhood must choose one of two options; ie choosing to learn a trade or to acquire higher education. The choice of which way to go depends on a number of factors. It depends on whether the child has an academic or technical turn. If the child is gifted both ways then the financial status of the parents or the guardian determines which option the child chooses eventually. When the right decisions is not made the end result is that the child ends up among jobless and frustrated persons and the society suffers in terms of poverty and the vices such as prostitution, armed robbery, “4-1-9,” and other unfortunate avenues the child chooses to walk.

A vocation, no matter how frivolous, solves the problem of frustration that inevitably follows when people become tired of giving the unemployed. Nothing wears down a person like being hungry and not seeing the food to eat. Situation like this have the capacity to trigger off a killer kind of frustration. In this situation an unemployed begins to see justification in stealing and eventually robbery. In this regard, a skill that brings just a little becomes very useful. If for instance a juvenile is skilled in carpentry and has his saw, hammer and tape measure, people will always called him to nail one kitchen stool, fix one broken door or to construct one box for casting lintel and is thus able to exercise control over the urge to steal or play the scam on an unsuspecting person.

The problems that follow the inability to empower a young man or woman can however be minimized if only the right steps are taken at the right time. It has often been said, “it is easier to bend a young shoot than to bend and old trunk.” It is the primary responsibility of parents to study the child’s academic life and decide what is best for him at the right time. If the child is not doing well, it is for them to realize this and take a drastic action to get the child to learn a suitable vocation. If he is doing well and they are confident they have the financial resources to support the child up to the stage of higher education then so be it. It is however, wiser to let the child to learn both, as there are lots of youths out there who have the education but have not been without jobs for many years. The fact is that parents often drag their feet leaving the child to grow beyond the critical age. From that point, miracles alone are needed to reverse the unsafe direction the child’s life faces.
